GREAT PYRENEES
The Great Mountain Pyrenees, or Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean Mountain Dog as they are known in the UK and Australis, are a very old, very large breed that has been used by shepherds for hundreds of ;years in southern France and northern Spain in the Pyrenees Mountains to guard their flocks of sheep against predators.
They are gaining recognition now in North America for the same purpose and also as a loving happy pet. The Pyrenees are very gentle, loving dogs that are very loyal and protective of their family and property and can be a very imposing guardian.
Their heavy, double coats which allow them to be outdoors in very extreme climate conditions, are white and some have a face mask and patches of badger or 'blaireau' (French) varying shades of beige and gray or black (which sometimes fades as the dogs get a little older). Their almond eyes, outlined in black are very gentle and thoughtful with a dignified expression. They have a double dew claw on the back legs and a beautiful, curved, plume tail. Having all white dogs is not preferred by some breeders because they sometimes lose that black pigment in their eye rims and noses, which is a distinguishing characteristic of the purebreds.
Their strength of character is also accented by their ability to think independently and take required action in the face of a threat to their 'family', whether it is sheep, goats or other livestock. Because of this, they are in need of a firm hand in training and need to know their boundaries.
Our dogs are not registered for "show", but we raise them for pets and guardians. They are not an indoor dog and do require room to roam, or regular consistent exercise. If allowed, they are a very affectionate pet and will reward their owners with lots of love and attention. |
